Study Links Children’s Intelligence To Parents’ Longer Lifespans

Researchers analyzed genetic data from nearly 400,000 people and found genes boosting childhood intelligence also predict longer parental lifespans. The study examined 12,441 children’s cognitive test results alongside how long 389,166 parents lived. Results showed about one-third of genetic influences on childhood intelligence overlap with factors affecting longevity. Scientists believe certain genes may directly build healthier bodies and brains, or intelligence genes lead to better education and life circumstances. A review of 16 studies tracking over 1 million people found mortality risk dropped 24% for every standard deviation increase in childhood intelligence scores. (Story URL)
