The Recording Academy has updated the rules for Best New Artist, giving performers more chances to qualify for one of the Grammy Awards’ most debated categories.
Under the new rule announced for the 2027 Grammy cycle, artists may now be submitted for Best New Artist up to four times. The previous limit was three. The change is meant to reflect how modern music careers often build slowly, with artists gaining wider attention years after releasing their first work.
The category has long raised questions because its name can suggest a brand-new act, even though nominees are often artists who have already released albums, toured, or built large followings. The update does not change that basic tension. Instead, it widens the window for artists whose careers are still considered to be developing.
The Recording Academy also announced other changes, including new and returning categories across pop, Latin, R&B, and folk fields. The updates will apply ahead of the 69th Grammy Awards.
