A new study from the University Of Exeter found that virtual reality experiences can relieve pain as effectively as painkillers. Researchers exposed 29 healthy volunteers to electric shocks on the forearm, then showed them nature scenes from Oregon waterfalls using VR headsets. The pain relief from the 45-minute immersive VR session lasted longer and was twice as effective as viewing the same scenes on a 2D screen, according to questionnaires. fMRI scans showed that people who felt more present in VR reported greater pain reduction. Dr. Sam Hughes, who led the study, said, “We’ve seen a growing body of evidence show that exposure to nature can help reduce short term, everyday pain.” (Story URL)
