Radioactive Wasp Nest Found At Former Nuclear Facility Site

Workers at the Savannah River Site, a former nuclear production facility in South Carolina, discovered a highly radioactive wasp nest on July 3rd, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy. The report states the nest was found on a stanchion near a tank at the site, which was once used to manufacture nuclear materials. Upon investigation, the nest was determined to be highly radioactive. However, the Department of Energy clarified this was not due to a loss of contamination control at the nuclear facility. Rather, the nest was considered a victim of “legacy radioactive contamination” at the site. The workers subsequently sprayed and bagged the nest as radiological waste. The surrounding ground and area did not show any signs of contamination. The Savannah River Site, which spans over 300 square miles, was built in the 1950s to produce nuclear materials and weapons components during the Cold War.
